Glebe House in Burwash is hoping to receive planning permission for it be used for weddings, camping and corporate events.

The proposal from the grade II* listed building on Etchingham Road will be considered at a Rother District Council planning meeting tomorrow (Thursday, October 15).

Officers have recommended the plans to be approved as they believe the economic gains from the events outweigh any concerns.

But the final decision rests with committee members.

“The business use proposed to be retained has created employment opportunities and attracts visitors to the local area which is of benefit to the economy,” the report said.

“These are positive factors which weigh in favour of the scheme.”

One objection letter was received by the council and three comments from residents and Burwash Parish Council.

The site is in the High Weald area of outstanding natural beauty and the temporary tents used for ‘glamping’ events would impact on its character and appearance, according to the report.

But it also said it would, “bring economic benefits to the local economy and there would be no harm to the listed building or its setting, highway safety or the living conditions of the occupants of nearby properties, provided appropriate safeguarding conditions are adhered to.”

Officers suggested vegetation screening and limitations on the number of tents and days allowed could be applied.

Glebe House has been used for events since May 2013 but pre-planning advice led to concerns about the narrow access to the site.
