Warning to dog owners after palm oil washes up on Sussex shores

Dog walkers are being urged to avoid beaches across Sussex today (Tuesday, April 5) after a large amount of palm oil washed up on the shore.

The white or yellow waxy substance, which can be fatal for dogs if ingested, has been spotted strewn across the coastline from Martello Tower and Splash Point in Seaford, along to Newhaven, Shoreham and Worthing.

Adur and Worthing Council took to Twitter to say its cleansing and foreshores team are continually monitoring the situation but “strongly advised dog walkers and beach users to keep away from the substance while it’s being identified”.

Newhaven Coastguard also posted on Facebook warning residents of the potential danger but added all relevant authorities have been notified.
